Lip filler aftercare is key to achieve the full effects of your treatment, especially when you’ve made such an investment in your confidence. There are many things that can affect the outcome of your fillers, either for better or for worse. Here at Infinity Aesthetics, we’ll run through things you should avoid and some helpful tips. So, what are the dos and don’ts for after lip fillers?
Avoiding an increase in swelling and bruising is vital to lip filler aftercare. Refraining from exercise for 24 to 48 hours after treatment can prevent increased swelling. You should also avoid other activities like flying, where changes in air pressure may worsen swelling and bruising, or even drinking through a straw. You should make sure you stay hydrated and reduce swelling with an ice pack if necessary. Attending any follow-up appointments is also incredibly important, ensuring the treatment is going as planned.

What Are The Dos And Don’ts After Lip Fillers?
Designed to add volume to your lips, fillers are a minimally invasive procedure and are highly customisable. You can alter the size or shape of your lips to suit your desired outcome with a huge amount of control. Lip filler aftercare is just as important as the procedure itself, and there are a few things that can make or break the way your fillers heal.
Do
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is important to make sure you heal well and can even promote faster recovery. Many products, like the Juvederm filler we use here at Infinity Aesthetics, use hyaluronic acid (HA) as a main ingredient. HA draws in water, which can make lips more chapped, so this moisture needs to be replaced.
- Use Ice Packs: You can reduce the swelling caused by your treatment by applying an ice pack two to three times a day. The low temperature can slow blood flow to your lips, bringing down some swelling and reducing bruising. Doing this for around ten minutes each time should help with recovery.
- Take Painkillers: If you need to, you can take some over-the-counter painkillers to reduce some of the discomfort that might follow your treatment. This medication can tackle both swelling and pain, but make sure to avoid any blood thinners, as they can make bruising worse.
- Protect Your Lips: Be gentle with any exfoliating products or harsh brushes around your lips. You’ll need to take some extra care when doing things like brushing your teeth or applying lip balm. If you’re going to be outside for a long period of time, make sure to use an SPF product too, as UV rays can break down some fillers. This can cause your body to absorb them faster and reduce the longevity of your results.
Don’t
- Take A Flight: You should avoid flying after your procedure because of the changes in pressure. This can make swelling and bruising worse, possibly impacting your recovery. Planes also tend to have quite dry air, again affecting the hydration levels in your lips, especially with HA fillers.
- Drink Alcohol: Alcohol can act as a blood thinner, meaning your bruising and swelling might get worse. It can also dehydrate you and your lips, making for an uncomfortable recovery.
- Smoke: One of the main side effects of smoking is interrupting your skin’s healing process, as well as ageing it. This could alter the longevity and outcome of your lip fillers. Your lips also pucker when you smoke, putting pressure on the area, which might be painful after your procedure. The same can be said for drinking through a straw.
- Expose Yourself To Increased Heat: Warmer temperatures, whether it comes from strenuous exercise or activities like saunas or steam rooms, can worsen swelling. Heat causes your blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow and worsening swelling. You might also cause further dehydration or irritation.
Can You Speed Up Lip Filler Recovery?
Whilst not necessarily speeding up your recovery, following the advice above surrounding lip filler aftercare is helpful in keeping your recovery period to a minimum. Focus on reducing swelling and avoiding further irritation. Add in extra steps, like sleeping with an extra pillow to help fluid drain or avoiding salty foods, and you should be healed up in no time!

Lip Filler Techniques
Application techniques can vary depending on what you’d like to get out of your treatment, but your comfort should always be placed at the forefront. Here are two examples of treatment methods, both of which we use here at Infinity Aesthetics:
- Cannula Technique: A more gentle approach that uses a blunt-tipped cannula to administer filler. This method allows for a smoother placement of the filler, reducing the risk of bruising and enhancing safety. We recommend this technique for those with delicate lip anatomy or clients who are looking for more subtle enhancements.
- Needle Technique: The needle technique offers unparalleled accuracy and is perfect for clients looking for more precise results. Our application ensures minimal discomfort and natural-looking results. This technique is well-suited to adding definition to the lip borders or increasing the volume of certain areas.
We Also Offer:
- Anti-wrinkle injections.
- Dermal fillers – such as lips, cheeks, chin, forehead, non-surgical rhinoplasty and as part of a full-facial treatment.
- Fat-dissolving injections.
- And more – including Morpheus8 radiofrequency.
FAQs
How Long Do Lip Filler Treatments Last?
Dermal fillers in lips tend to last up to a year due to the soft and malleable filler. During your initial consultation, photos of the desired look will be a great tool to ensure that you receive the treatment you are expecting. Over time, your lips will return to their original appearance, and so follow-up refinement sessions can help to maintain your rejuvenated appearance for multiple years.
Should I Expect Any Side Effects Following Treatment?
Common side effects of injection-related treatments include bruising, swelling, itching, pain, and tenderness of the skin around the injection site. Using expert technique, trustworthy filler products, and microcannulas, these side effects can be reduced, but not entirely eliminated.
In rare cases, you may experience a blood vessel blockage. However, great care is taken to avoid this. Our dermal fillers can be reversed using an enzyme to break up the bonds between molecules.

Can Juvederm Lip Filler Be Dissolved If Needed?
If necessary, Juvederm lip fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Only hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero can be dissolved. While hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance, the version used in fillers is synthetic. Fillers made from anything else are not reversible.
How Much Will It Cost For Lip Fillers?
The cost of your treatment will depend on how much dermal filler is required to create the desired look. A personalised treatment plan is developed for each patient that Dr Owen works with. Take a look at our price list for more information.
