Many of these first-generation injections tend to cause much greater side effects than the second-generation products that are now in the process of being licensed.

Owen uses a third-generation treatment called DesoFace (or DesoBody for the rest of the body) containing deoxycholic acid, acting as a detergent for fat cells which are broken down. This is administered with a cannula meaning that there is only a single injection point. Owen can carefully fan the product using the cannula, ensuring care is taken to stay within the fat compartment to reduce complications. The risk of serious complications from the procedure is very low, typically below 0.05%.

Fat dissolving injections in the chin/submental area are often combined (on another treatment date) with dermal fillers to enhance the chin projection and now Morpheus8 radiofrequency treatment which provides excellent long-term jawline definition. This is due to the skin tightening and fat remodelling and can be used in combination with the fat-dissolving injections.

There is usually some swelling and redness after the procedure, typically settling down over the first 48-72 hours. This is a little uncomfortable but does not normally cause any functional difficulties and most people are able to continue with their daily activities. Over the next couple of weeks it can be helpful to massage the area a few times a day to encourage lymphatic drainage.
