It is a well known fact that as we get older, our skin begins to wrinkle. Especially noticeable on our face, the loss of elasticity and volume in our skin results in lines and wrinkles appearing and staying. Frown lines are no different; typically appearing between the eyebrows, these wrinkles can have a major impact on self-esteem. So, can you get rid of frown lines?
Fortunately, yes, there are ways to get rid of frown lines. Whether by receiving cosmetic treatment or using natural home remedies, wrinkles on the face can be effectively reduced. Cosmetic treatments for frown lines include dermal fillers, Sculptra and anti-wrinkle injections.

What Causes Frown Lines?
As we age, our skin produces less collagen and elastin. These proteins are fundamental in giving our skin its volume and firmness. Combining the reduced production of collagen and elastin with repeated facial movements causes the formation of static wrinkles on the face. Frown lines are also affected by:
- Genetics – Your very DNA will determine when and where wrinkles first appear.
- Dehydration – With reduced moisture in the skin, the likelihood of wrinkles and other blemishes developing increases.
- Smoking – The repeated motion of smoking a cigarette can cause the formation of wrinkles with time. Furthermore, tobacco smoke causes wrinkles due to the narrowing of the blood vessels which are then able to deliver less oxygenated blood to those tissues.
- Alcohol – Increased alcohol intake can lead to the development of upper facial lines, under-eye puffiness and midface volume loss.
- Stress – The increased facial tension and repeated facial movements that are typical with experiences of stress can contribute to the development of frown lines.
- Sunlight – UV rays from the sun cause the collagen and elastin in your skin to break down, making you more susceptible to the formation of lines and wrinkles.

Can You Remove Frown Lines?
Fortunately, if you have developed frown lines, there are a number of ways to get rid of them as well as other facial wrinkles. Some of the more popular cosmetic treatments are included below.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers can be used to treat a variety of skin ageing conditions. Injections of hyaluronic acid-based filler can effectively restore volume that has been lost over time to improve skin firmness and elasticity. This can significantly reduce frown lines, as we often see the overlying muscle is less contractile once the volume is restored with immediate results and minimal downtime.
Sculptra
Equally as effective as dermal fillers is Sculptra treatment. Using injections of Poly-L-Lactic acid under the skin, collagen production is boosted to increase the plumpness of sunken areas including frown lines. Using Sculptra treatment, a more youthful, natural-looking appearance can last for up to two years.
Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Botulinum toxin can also be used to significantly reduce wrinkles, especially on the face. This treatment works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for the formation of wrinkles, and can be used for any form of wrinkle on the face including crow’s feet and forehead lines.
How to Get Rid of Frown Lines Naturally
If you are not interested in receiving a treatment to remove your frown lines, there are a number of natural remedies that may be less effective but can still provide some results. These methods include:
- Facial exercises – While the effectiveness of facial exercises in reducing or preventing wrinkles has not been proved, there are some movements that may help to reduce frown lines if repeated daily. For example, by working the frontalis muscle everyday, you may be able to increase skin suppleness. It is worth noting that some people claim that facial exercises will only sharpen frown lines due to the repetitive motion.
- Homemade remedies – There are a number of substances that some people claim can be effective at reducing wrinkles. These homemade remedies include applying egg whites to the affected areas, massaging coconut oil or sweet almond oil into frown lines, and swallowing a tablespoon of flaxseed oil two to four times a day.
How to Prevent Frown Lines
There are a number of steps that you can take to help prevent or delay frown lines from appearing in the first place. These steps include:
- Maintaining a healthy diet – Make sure to eat plenty of foods that contain minerals and vitamins, and drink plenty of water. This will help to keep skin hydrated and healthy for longer.
- Moisturising regularly – Using a good quality moisturiser regularly will help to maintain skin hydration and elasticity.
- Getting enough sleep – Sleep helps damaged skin cells repair, but also consider sleeping on your back to prevent the pillow from stretching and wrinkling your skin.
-
- Regular exfoliation – This will help to ensure that any dead skin cells are scrubbed away to leave fresh, healthy skin.
- Using sunscreen daily – Even when the sky is cloudy, it is important that you wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
- Reduce alcohol intake – Prevent the dehydrating effect of alcohol on the skin by reducing your alcohol intake.
- Quit smoking – Reduce the negative impact of smoking on the skin by quitting smoking altogether.
