A weak chin, also known as retrogenia or retrognathia, is a fairly common condition in which the chin appears small or less prominent than the other features on someone’s face. Having a weak chin can be detrimental to your facial aesthetics which, in turn, can affect self-esteem. So, is there any way to fix weak chin?
Luckily, if you suffer from a weak chin, there are a number of surgical and non-surgical treatments available to fix it. Surgical treatments include undergoing chin augmentation surgery using implants, or chin advancement surgery. Non-surgical treatments include using corrective makeup, facial exercises and chin augmentation using dermal fillers.

How to Fix Weak Chin
Fortunately, if you have a weak chin that you wish to be rid of, there are a number of options when it comes to fixing it. The method and result of the treatment is highly dependent on the individual, and so which treatment is best for you might not be the best option for someone else. This is why it is vital that any treatment for a weak chin is booked with a qualified professional.
Surgical Treatments
When it comes to fixing a weak chin, surgical options offer drastic results that are often long-lasting. However, it is also worth noting that these treatments can be highly-invasive and carry a higher risk of complications such as infection, implant displacement, nerve damage, and adverse reactions to anaesthesia.
- Chin augmentation surgery – Incisions are made to insert implants and improve chin definition and projection. For this surgery, you will require anaesthesia, and a detailed initial consultation and pre-operative planning to ensure the surgery is a success.
- Chin advancement surgery – Another more invasive treatment for a weak chin is chin advancement surgery that repositions the chin bone to achieve a more balanced and projected chin profile. As with receiving implants, this surgery requires local anaesthesia and a detailed consultation and planning stage.
Non-Surgical Treatments
If you are put off by the higher risk associated with surgical treatments, non-surgical methods may be more suitable.
- Corrective Makeup – A temporary solution for a weak chin might be as simple as using makeup to create the illusion of a better-defined chin. Consider using techniques such as contouring, highlighting and blending to make your chin profile more balanced.
- Facial Exercises – While the effectiveness of facial exercises and jaw strengthening movements has never been proven conclusively, there are a number of movements you can do at home that could help to improve the definition of the underlying muscles. Such exercises include neck resistance, chin lifts and jaw push-ups.
- Dermal Fillers – Perhaps the most effective – while remaining minimally-invasive – method of treating a weak chin is the use of dermal fillers. Favoured by most, dermal fillers can dramatically improve the contour and projection of the chin. Hyaluronic acid is injected into areas of the chin to provide immediate results with minimal downtime.
Weak Chin Causes
If you have a weak chin, you might be wondering where it came from. More often than not, the root of a weak chin lies in genetics. This is typically characterised by insufficient growth of either the upper or lower jaw resulting in the dentofacial bone deformity known as retrogenia. There is nothing that can be done to prevent a weak chin developing in this case.
Similarly, another cause of a weak chin are some habits and conditions that are acquired while in childhood. These contributors to a weak chin include:
- Finger sucking
- Atypical swallowing
- Poor respiratory function
- Allergies
