Hand rejuvenation is growing in popularity, bringing an ideal solution to patients concerned with the ageing appearance of their hands. Over time, the hands lose volume, with veins, wrinkles, and tendons becoming more visible. A number of environmental and health factors can contribute to this loss of volume. Fortunately, injectable treatments are an amazing non-surgical route to restoring youthful skin. But there are a number of options available, so which injections are suitable for hand rejuvenation?
The process of hand rejuvenation typically involves the use of dermal fillers to restore lost volume and younger-looking skin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, like Juvederm, or calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers, like Radiesse, are most commonly used in this treatment. They both have similar immediate effects, but are absorbed by the body differently and last for different lengths of time.
Read on to find out more about the injections involved in hand rejuvenation and how they work.
Why Do Hands Age?
As we age, the natural production of collagen, which gives our skin volume, slows down. This happens all over the body, but appears more noticeable on the hands due to the lower levels of fat compared to the face, for example. In combination with the loss of volume, this makes signs of ageing, like wrinkles, veins, and tendons, more visible.
Our hands are also more frequently exposed to external factors that can accelerate ageing. Unprotected sun exposure is a large contributor to the ageing of the hands, increasing the likelihood of wrinkles and age spots. Our hands are also more likely to be exposed to water, soap, chemicals, and temperature fluctuations.
How Do Injections Help With Hand Rejuvenation?
When it comes to hand rejuvenation, dermal fillers are typically used to restore the volume we lose in our skin as we age. By plumping up the skin, injectable treatments give the skin a more youthful look by concealing the bone structure of the hand, and minimising the appearance of veins and wrinkles.
The main aim of dermal fillers for hand rejuvenation is to improve skin texture and reduce any visible signs of ageing. These treatments are unlikely to have any effect on sun damage or pigmentation, however, so it’s important to understand which concern you’d most like to address during treatment.
Which Are The Best Dermal Fillers For Hand Rejuvenation?
There are a lot of injectable treatment options available for use during hand rejuvenation. Two main products, Radiesse and Juvederm, are typically the go-to products, so we’ve summarised how they work below:
Radiesse
Often referred to as the ‘Radiesse Hand Lift’, this type of dermal filler is made from small beads of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). Whilst not permanent, Radiesse is long-lasting and offers effects for up to two years depending on the client and treatment area.
The CaHA particles in Radiesse form a scaffold once injected. Your own cells are encouraged to produce collagen around these spheres. The injected product eventually dissolves, leaving behind the new collagen structures. Radiesse wears extremely well in the hands, and is perfect for filling depressions in the skin and providing a fuller, more youthful appearance.
Radiesse is the dermal filler of choice here at Infinity Aesthetics, with hand rejuvenation becoming increasingly more common over recent years. Juvederm
Juvederm differs slightly from Radiesse, despite showing very similar, immediate results. The main component of this dermal filler is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance in the body, improving the look of skin by attracting and retaining water.
As it already exists in the body, the HA in Juvederm is gradually absorbed, meaning repeat treatments are required to maintain long-term results. The procedure itself is similar to that of Radiesse, and the fillers give the same youthful appearance in the short-term.

FAQs
How Much Does Hand Rejuvenation Cost?
The typical patient will need around two millilitres of filler to get the desired results. Our Radiesse hand rejuvenation is priced at around £400, but for more information, see our price list.
What Is The Downtime Of Hand Rejuvenation Treatment?
You can typically resume most activities or return to work immediately after treatment. We do, however, recommend that you avoid intense physical activity for the first 24 to 48 hours and limit your alcohol consumption. This is in order to minimise any excess bruising or swelling.
Does Hand Rejuvenation Have Any Complications Or Side Effects?
As with any medical treatment, hand rejuvenation has the potential to cause side effects, although these are usually mild. Swelling, redness, and bruising in small amounts are common and typically settle after a couple of days. All possible side effects will be explained by Dr Thomas at the time of treatment.
Radiesse isn’t yet reversible, but the risks of blood vessel complications is less likely in the hands than the face, minimised further with expert techniques.
