Face Treatment
The position and shape of the cheekbones is essential for facial beauty. Dermal fillers for cheeks can restore well-defined and proportioned cheeks to improve the profile of the face increasing a youthful and attractive look without shadows or creases.
This treatment is great for patients who suffer from loss of volume of cheek tissue as a result of ageing, pregnancy, weight loss or simple being hereditary. The dermal fillers used to reshape the face are hyaluronic fillers (from the Restylane portfolio, the most used filler brand in the world) that can help to rehydrate the cheeks and smooth the skin and restore lost contour.
The most common questions patients have about dermal fillers for cheeks is how long the results last? The answer is that results usually last from 12-18 months after treatment on average. However, each patient will experience different results as everyone’s body and facial structure is unique. For the best advice it is best to consult an experienced cosmetic doctor (like Owen) who can give you an expert assessment of what can be expected based on facial proportions. Skilled professionals with a great deal of experience can help advise you on what will suit you best; sometimes there isn’t just “one size fits all” when it comes to dermal fillers. A reputable cosmetic professional will also be able to inform you of complications and how these can be avoided, with meticulous technique and excellent aftercare.

Owen practices cheek augmentation with different types of high-quality dermal fillers at his Swansea aesthetic clinic using hyaluronic acid fillers with both needle and cannula technique, and measures to minimise any discomfort. The aim is for a projected cheek but a natural look.
For ladies we hope to reproduce the ‘Ogee curve’ which is a double curve on the 45 degree view, which is a look of classic beauty.
Men also have an apex, set slightly lower than females, but is essential to avoid a gaunt look that is ageing.
With cheek filler its essential to understand the different areas of the cheek 3 dimensionally.
Within the cheek there are superficial and deep fat pads which change differently as we age. It is essential to be able to place the filler in the correct compartment. For example if filler is placed incorrectly too superficially, it can sit on top of muscles and can move with facial animation which can look aesthetically pleasing. However done correctly it can enhance looks, by feminising or masculinising a person and enabling them to look more youthful by restoring some of the volume lost (for example some of the deep cheek fat pads).
As part of the full facial assessment, the optimal position of the cheek apex is measured and marked using the golden ratio (see here).
The apex (point) of the cheek is enhanced and the cheekbones and surrounding soft tissues shaped to restore the fullness of youth.
Cheek filler can be combined with treatment to the lower eyelid/cheek junction (the tear trough) to eliminate ageing shadows. Dermal fillers can be injected in several ways such as over the cheekbones to provide more definition, often giving a “chiselled” appearance.
Alternatively, injecting the dermal filler into the soft tissue of the cheeks can lift the area, providing youthful volume and correcting the sunken appearance which is associated with ageing.
Improving lift from the cheek area can also improve areas in the lower face with a non-surgical facelift to pull back on the sagging skin which can form jowls and lines, and is often the first treatment to undertake for those zones.
Dr Owen has undertaken a high level of training to give him the experience to inject facial fillers appropriately and safely. Patients trust him to restore the volume that has been lost while enhancing the cheekbones in a natural way.
Every patient requires a unique amount of treatment from us, and therefore everyone receives a different plan. While we attempt to be as economical as possible, we charge by volume. Every patient receives a special treatment plan from us, so everyone has a different amount of filler.
Owen will decide how much filler to use after assessing the patient’s condition, comparing it to pre-treatment photographs, and measuring how much filler he has used. Patients with larger deficits will require more filler, while those with less will require less.

The longevity of dermal fillers varies greatly, but on average lasts 12-18 months in being able to see and feel by palpation. However, MRI evidence shows evidence of fillers more than 10 years after treatment! Periodic top up treatments every couple of years is usually sufficient for most people.
Fillers in the cheeks are injected deeply in most cases, therefore minimising lumps and modules and more robust fillers tend to be long lasting.
Also we exclusively use high-quality products like Juvederm Voluma, Restylane Lyft, Belotero, and Teoxane RHA which are all FDA-approved and as safe as they come. Many salons uses fillers which are mass produced in the Far East with little evidence of safety of longevity – don’t be afraid to ask what filler is being used.
With cheek filler, patients are able to get back to work right away, but they should avoid intense physical exercise for the first 24-48 hours to minimise swelling and bruising. You should avoid flying for 24-48 hours after the operation, as well as avoiding contact with the area or applying makeup for around 12 hours. No more than very moderate alcohol drinking is advised to minimise swelling, and it may be best to abstain on the day of the procedure.
The procedure is done with a fine needle or cannula and is not usually painful (it is one of the least uncomfortable areas for injections on the face).
Owen takes great care to minimise discomfort further in patients who sense pain more including cooling, vibrating, using meticulous technique, and using fillers pre-mixed with local anesthetics (therefore minimising post-injection discomfort).
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring compound, so side effects are rare. Swelling and occasional redness and bruising are common, but they disappear after a couple of days. Dr Thomas will inform you of all potential side effects at the time of your examination. With proper technique, knowledge of anatomy, and blunt-tipped microcannulas, serious complications are avoided. Hyaluronic acid fillers also contain a substance that breaks up dermal filler and reverses blood vessel blockages.
